Sherwood Anderson was introduced to Southwest Virginia in the summer of 1925 when he visited the mountains of Grayson County.  He fell in love with the area and the people, bought land and built a home which he named, Ripshin. In 1927 Sherwood Anderson learned about two newspapers that were for sale in Marion, VA, located in neighboring Smyth County.  He bought both newspapers and published the Marion Democrat on Tuesdays and the Smyth County News on Thursdays.
