Sherwood Anderson was introduced to Southwest Virginia in the summer of 1925 when he visited the mountains of Grayson County. He fell in love with the area and the people, bought land and built a home which he named, Ripshin. In 1927 Sherwood Anderson learned about two newspapers that were for sale in Marion, VA, located in neighboring Smyth County. He bought both newspapers and published the Marion Democrat on Tuesdays and the Smyth County News on Thursdays. The following links provide access to digitally preserved copies of the Smyth County News and the Marion Democrat during years that Sherwood Anderson owned, published, edited, and wrote them.
This project is currently under construction and links to more issues will be added as they are completed: Smyth County News 1929 January 3, 1929 January 10, 1929 January 17, 1929 January 24, 1929 January 31, 1929 February 7, 1929 February 14, 1929 February 21, 1929 February 28, 1929 March 7, 1929 March 14, 1929 March 21, 1929 March 28, 1929 April 4, 1929 April 11, 1929 April 18, 1929 April 25, 1929 May 2, 1929 May 9, 1929 May 16, 1929 May 23, 1929 May 30, 1929 June 6, 1929 June 13, 1929 June 20, 1929 June 27, 1929 |
